Wd40 on a motorcycle?

so...i'm a little bit of a noob when it comes to motorcycle maintainence. Ive recently got myself a 1995 zx6r. i took the fairings off to discover that the bike had likely never been given a good cleaning, so away i went to cleaning it. i had seen a series of videos on youtube where a seemingly experienced man uses wd40 to degrease/clean/protect his 96 cbr. so like an idiot i sprayed a few parts liberally (avoiding breaks, tires, and controls ofcourse) and once i took the bike outside and started it up, a large cloud of wd40 mist appeared (why i didnt foresee this, i do not know). however, after a couple rides, i can still see a small amount of mist/smoke floating up from under the front. even after a few rides, is it possible there is still unevaporated wd40 thats cooking off or is this a serious problem? are there any serious reprocussions of my idiotic use of wd40? how shall i give my bike a good clean in the future if i am not to use wd40?
